Rivian has officially secured a motor vehicle dealer license in Washington state, clearing a regulatory milestone that will allow the automaker to expand its direct-to-consumer operations in the Pacific Northwest.

Rivian employees, partners and supporters gathered in Seattle on September 15 to mark the completion of a multi-year effort involving the company’s policy, legal, communications and field operations teams.

License follows years of regulatory work

Rivian said its teams spent years navigating Washington’s regulatory requirements as the company worked to expand its direct-sales model in the state.

The license is expected to give Rivian greater ability to build direct relationships with customers in Washington while expanding its local operations. The company also said the milestone will help streamline the purchasing experience for Pacific Northwest residents, according to a Rivian Stories post.

“This victory reflects what’s possible when community advocacy and internal perseverance align. Beyond the legislative work, this milestone allows us to build stronger, direct relationships with our Washington owners and accelerate clean transportation adoption across the region,” said Abigail Ramsden of Rivian’s State Policy Team.

The company credited employees across multiple departments, along with regional partners and supporters, for helping move the effort forward.

Rivian plans to expand Washington presence

Rivian Vice President of Sales Gary Gaines described the license as the result of a long-running effort across the company.

“Securing this license is a testament to the grit and relentless commitment of our team. Across every department, people poured years of energy into advocating for our direct-to-consumer model in Washington and seeing that effort cross the finish line is a massive moment for all of us,” Gaines said.

Rivian did not provide specific details about additional facilities or locations that will open as a result of the license. The company said it is now positioned to expand its local footprint and continue developing its presence throughout Washington.

The milestone also adds another state to Rivian’s direct-to-consumer operations as the company continues working within different state-level vehicle sales regulations.
