Rivian announced that hundreds of production-intent R2 prototypes have already rolled off its pilot line. With less than six months before the compact crossover is scheduled to enter mass production, the EV maker confirmed the vehicles are now undergoing final validation testing.

The camouflaged builds have already been spotted on public roads and even at Tesla Superchargers, fueling anticipation among Rivian fans.

Rivian advances R2 development

The R2 compact crossover is widely seen as a make-or-break product for Rivian, with strong expectations since its unveiling earlier this year. The company confirmed the prototypes are production-intent builds, meaning they closely match the version customers will eventually receive, unless last-minute flaws require adjustments, according to autoevolution. Rivian said its Illinois facility paused production earlier this month to install R2-specific equipment, paving the way for trial runs and fine-tuning of the assembly process.

Unlike typical automakers, which usually create a few dozen validation builds, Rivian claims to have produced several hundred. While the exact number remains uncertain, the unusually large fleet indicates the company’s aggressive push towards readiness. Some of the vehicles will be dedicated to crash testing, durability assessments, and type approvals, while others will be used for on-road performance evaluations.

Rivian R2 production timeline

Though the prototypes signal progress, Rivian emphasized that customers should not expect immediate deliveries. The R2 is still projected to enter customer hands in the second half of 2026, following extensive testing of driving dynamics, range, and durability. The prototypes feature 21-inch wheels, which may become standard when deliveries begin.

The sight of camouflaged R2s in public traffic highlights Rivian’s efforts to build momentum around its upcoming vehicle. As final testing proceeds, the company is aiming to validate its processes while reassuring investors and customers of its production readiness.
