The automaker plans to start deliveries around June, with analysts emphasizing that a successful launch is critical to expanding Rivian’s reach beyond its premium lineup.

Rivian confirmed it is developing additional variants of its upcoming R2 electric vehicles, CEO RJ Scaringe said in a Reuters interview, just days after the company began volume production of the smaller, more affordable SUV.
The automaker plans to start deliveries around June, with analysts emphasizing that a successful launch is critical to expanding Rivian’s reach beyond its premium lineup.
Rivian, known for its R1T pickup and R1S SUV, has not yet revealed what the new R2 variants will include. Scaringe confirmed their existence but declined to provide specifics.
“There are other variants of R2, which we haven’t shown,” he said when asked about a potential pickup version. He added that “what we’re building in Georgia allows for different variations,” referencing the company’s new manufacturing plant designed to support expanded R2 production.
According to Reuters, the company previously announced multiple trims for the R2 SUV, with the rollout beginning with a $58,000 version. Lower-priced configurations are expected to follow later this year and in 2027. Rivian also plans to introduce a $45,000 variant with over 275 miles of range by late 2027, a model that analysts expect could significantly broaden its customer base.
Rivian has also introduced its mid-size platform strategy, which includes the R2 SUV alongside the smaller R3 crossover and the performance-focused R3X. “So clearly there could be an R2X,” Scaringe said, while noting he wanted to be careful about formally announcing future programs.

The R2 program is expected to play a central role in Rivian’s near-term growth. The company has forecast a 53 percent increase in deliveries this year, driven by the R2 rollout, implying approximately 22,000 to 23,000 R2 deliveries if demand remains steady and production ramps smoothly.
Industry conditions remain mixed. Demand for electric vehicles has been affected by the removal of key U.S. tax credits, although higher gasoline prices have supported some renewed interest. More affordable EVs are increasingly viewed as a critical segment, particularly as borrowing costs remain elevated.
Analysts see the R2 as a meaningful catalyst. Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Andres Sheppard said the vehicle is expected to “materially boost sales” and “capture additional EV market share,” citing its lower price point and autonomy features.
The R2 is also tied to a major future partnership. Uber plans to deploy 10,000 fully autonomous R2 vehicles starting in 2028 as part of a $1.25 billion robotaxi agreement with Rivian.
