Rivian has taken another step toward launching its upcoming Rivian R2, confirming that manufacturing validation builds are now coming off the line at its Illinois facility. The update signals progress toward series production of the automaker’s next-generation, lower-priced electric vehicle.

Validation builds begin at Normal, Il facility

Rivian shared the update in a recent LinkedIn post, stating that R2 manufacturing validation vehicles are being produced at its plant in Normal. The company noted that construction at the site has advanced rapidly, with the R2 production area built over the past year.

Validation builds are not customer-ready vehicles, but they represent a key phase in the manufacturing process, allowing automakers to test tooling, assembly procedures, and quality controls before full-scale production begins, according to CleanTechnica.

Rivian did not provide a specific start date for customer deliveries but has previously indicated that the R2 is intended to be its first high-volume, more affordable model.

R2 positioned as Rivian’s lower-priced, high-volume EV

The Rivian R2 is expected to start at approximately $45,000, significantly below the starting prices of Rivian’s current R1T and R1S, which are priced above $70,000. Rivian has said the R2 is designed for broader market appeal compared with its existing lineup.

Initial R2 production is planned for the Normal, Illinois plant, which Rivian has said has a maximum annual capacity of about 215,000 vehicles across all models. As production ramps up, Rivian also plans to manufacture the R2 at its future Georgia facility, further increasing potential output.

Rivian has not disclosed final production volumes or timelines for Georgia-based manufacturing. However, the company has previously stated that the R2 platform is central to its long-term growth strategy.

The start of validation builds indicates Rivian is moving closer to bringing the R2 to market, following several years of development focused on expanding beyond premium-priced electric trucks and SUVs.
