Rivian is preparing to scale production significantly as it transitions from a niche luxury EV maker into a higher-volume brand. The company’s upcoming R2 electric SUV is expected to play a central role in that shift, targeting a price point closer to the mass market while delivering performance and range comparable to established rivals.

During its fourth-quarter earnings call, Rivian guided for 62,000 to 67,000 vehicle deliveries in 2026, a notable jump from the roughly 42,000 vehicles delivered in 2025. The company indicated that the R2 will account for most of that increase as it begins production.

Rivian targets strong demand with R2 performance variant

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe indicated that the R2 launch configuration will be a dual-motor performance variant with a premium trim, which analysts estimate could start between $50,000 and $60,000.

Even at the upper end of that range, the R2 would remain significantly less expensive than the company’s current flagship SUV. The Rivian R1S starts at $76,990, meaning the R2 could undercut it by more than $15,000 while still offering strong performance credentials.

Early specifications suggest the dual-motor R2 could accelerate from 0–60 mph in roughly 3.5 to 3.6 seconds and deliver more than 300 miles of range. Those numbers place it close to the Tesla Model Y Performance AWD, which reaches 60 mph in about 3.3 seconds and carries an estimated 306-mile range, according to Forbes.

The R2 will also adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, aligning Rivian with the broader industry shift toward the charging connector. Rivian has stated that all vehicles produced from 2026 onward will include the NACS port as standard.

Lower price point could unlock Rivian’s next growth phase

Pricing is expected to be a key factor behind the R2’s anticipated demand. Scaringe noted during the earnings call that the U.S. market currently lacks high-quality electric vehicles priced around $50,000 or below, suggesting the R2 could fill an important gap.

The company has already reported what Scaringe described as an “enormous backlog” for the vehicle ahead of its production launch. Industry analysts believe achieving Rivian’s ambitious delivery targets will require the R2 to be priced aggressively compared with the company’s existing lineup.

A single-motor entry variant had previously been referenced by Rivian as starting around $45,000, though the price indication was later removed from the vehicle’s official webpage.

Rivian is expected to reveal final production specifications and pricing for the R2 on March 12, 2026, which will provide clearer insight into how the company plans to position the SUV in the rapidly expanding mid-priced EV segment.
