Rivian R2 Launch Nears, But Early Charging Tests Raise Concerns

Rivian Automotive confirmed that full details for the upcoming R2 crossover will be revealed March 12 at SXSW 2026, with deliveries expected later this spring. However, early media drives suggest charging performance may fall short of segment leaders, putting added pressure on Rivian’s most important vehicle launch to date.

Rivian R2 reveal set as deliveries approach

Rivian will disclose complete specifications, pricing, and available trims on March 12, the opening day of SXSW in Austin, where the automaker is serving as a major sponsor. Preproduction vehicles have already been shown to select media, signaling that the launch phase is well underway.

The R2 is positioned as Rivian’s first high-volume, more affordable SUV. It is widely viewed as central to the company’s path toward sustained profitability, offering a lower entry point than the R1S and R1T, according to autoevolution.

Early test vehicles reportedly featured a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup with an estimated 90 kWh battery pack and roughly 656 horsepower in Performance configuration. Rivian projects over 300 miles of range.

Charging speed draws early scrutiny

Initial testing suggests the R2 can charge from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes, with peak charging power around 240 kW. That places it broadly in line with many 400-volt EVs, but behind several 800-volt competitors capable of completing the same session in closer to 20 minutes.

Rivian indicated that the battery management system remains under refinement and that production vehicles could see improvements. Still, the early data highlights how competitive fast-charging performance has become in the midsize EV segment.

If early deliveries focus on higher-trim dual-motor variants, pricing may land well above the previously discussed $45,000 starting point. Analysts expect initial configurations to approach or exceed $55,000. For Rivian, the R2 is not just another model launch. It represents a critical expansion into a broader market segment at a time when scale and efficiency matter more than ever.
