California Governor Gavin Newsom has selected a black Rivian R1S SUV as his official state vehicle. The vehicle choice is particularly interesting, especially considering Governor Newsom’s tense relationship with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who builds his cars in California.

Why the Rivian Choice Matters

Prior to his Rivian R1S, the California Governor was using a Chevy Suburban as his state vehicle. Considering California’s stance on green transportation, it seemed like it would make sense for Newsom to opt for an electric vehicle from Tesla, since the company builds its cars in the state.

As per Ethan Elkind, director of the UC Berkeley Center for Law, Energy, and the Environment, however, Newsom’s choice is understandable considering Elon Musk’s current relationship with the Democratic party. “It feels like it’s a bit of a slap in the face at Tesla. I mean, I think at this point it would be hard to imagine the governor politically getting into a Tesla, given just how toxic Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has become to so many democratic voters in the state,” Elkind said.

According to CBS News, the California Highway Patrol’s Dignitary Protection Section purchased two Rivians. Rivian is headquartered in Irvine, CA, but the company manufactures its vehicles in Normal, Il. The company currently holds just 3% of California’s EV sales, making Newsom’s purchase a bold endorsement for the up-and-coming brand.

A Political Statement

This isn’t the first time a California governor has used a vehicle to make a political statement. Former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger promoted clean air using a hydrogen-powered Hummer that was built by General Motors. Former Governor Jerry Brown, on the other hand, drove a Dodge Plymouth to highlight his frugality. Governor Newsom’s Rivian R1S then seems to be the latest in a long line of cars that are intended to make a political statement.

Elkind, however, stated that one cannot help but see the California Governor’s opposition to Elon Musk with his Rivian purchase. “The fact that it’s not a Tesla, manufactured in California, I think is an interesting statement,” Elkins said.
