Rivian R1S and R1T Demand Slides in Q2, But Rivian Van Sales Hold Steady

Rivian’s US sales declined sharply in the second quarter of 2025, with combined R1 consumer vehicle deliveries falling 31% year-on-year to 7,898 units, according to data from Cox Automotive. The R1T pickup saw a steep 47.1% drop to 1,752 units, while the R1S SUV slipped 24.5% to 6,146 units.

Electric van sales up, but overall volume weakens

While the Rivian R1T and R1S were battered during the second quarter in the United States, the company’s commercial vehicle business provided a modest buffer. During Q2, 2,701 electric delivery vans were registered in the United States, a 22.4% increase from the same quarter in 2024, according to the Electric-Vehicles report. 

The company sold 19,152 total vehicles in the US during the first half of the year, including 14,982 R1 models and 4,170 vans. It should be noted that Rivian has warned of lower van deliveries in 2025 due to accelerated handoffs to Amazon late last year. Still, Amazon’s US delivery fleet has now grown to over 30,000 Rivian-built EVs. That’s a notable increase from the 20,000 that were reported at the end of last year.

Model transitions impact Q2 output

Rivian produced just 5,979 vehicles in Q2, a sharp decline from both the previous quarter (14,611 units) and Q2 2024 (9,612 units). The company attributed the drop to production changes ahead of the 2026 R1S and R1T launches, with Gen 2 quad-motor variants set to begin deliveries later this month. 

The R1S will start at $76,990, while the R1T begins at $70,990. Rivian is also preparing for a temporary plant shutdown to retool for the more affordable R2 SUV, expected in early 2026 with a target price around $45,000.
