Rivian reported its first full-year gross profit in 2025 and confirmed that customer deliveries of the upcoming Rivian R2 remain on track for the second quarter of 2026. The EV maker narrowed annual losses, boosted software revenue, and completed initial validation builds of the R2 at its Illinois facility as it prepares for its next growth phase.

Rivian swings to gross profit as software revenue climbs

Rivian posted consolidated gross profit of $144 million for 2025, a sharp reversal from a $1.2 billion gross loss the prior year. Net loss for the full year narrowed to $3.64 billion from $4.74 billion, while revenue rose 8% to $5.38 billion.

Automotive revenue declined 15% to $3.83 billion, reflecting lower regulatory credit sales and a shift in delivery mix. However, software and services revenue surged 222% to $1.55 billion, driven in part by engineering and electrical architecture work tied to its joint venture with Volkswagen Group, along with remarketing and after-sales growth.

The company attributed the move to gross profitability to stronger software performance, improved average selling prices, and lower cost per vehicle, according to Yahoo Finance. Production and deliveries for 2025 totaled 42,284 and 42,247 units, respectively.

In the fourth quarter, Rivian generated $120 million in gross profit on $1.28 billion in revenue. It produced 10,974 vehicles and delivered 9,745 during the period at its Normal, Illinois plant.

R2 validation builds complete ahead of Q2 2026 launch

Rivian said preparations for R2 manufacturing are progressing on schedule. Initial validation builds were completed in mid-January 2026 using production tooling at the Normal facility. The launch configuration will be a dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant, with additional specifications expected March 12.

Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe said the company spent 2025 focused on operational execution and scaling. “It’s incredibly exciting to see the early strong reviews of the R2 pre-production builds, and we can’t wait to get them to our customers next quarter,” he said.

Rivian also expanded its technology stack, rolling out its Universal Hands-Free driver assistance feature for second-generation R1 vehicles and introducing Rivian Unified Intelligence alongside its AI-powered Rivian Assistant voice interface.

For 2026, the company forecasts deliveries of 62,000 to 67,000 vehicles, alongside continued investment in production and technology.
