Production is expected to take place on a newly developed, highly automated line with a targeted annual capacity of 155,000 units.

Rivian detailed how it engineered the upcoming R2 around simplicity, lower cost, and manufacturing efficiency, positioning the midsize SUV as a clean-sheet platform built for scale. The company said R2 was designed from the outset to balance on-road refinement with real off-road capability, while being easier to build and service than prior models.
Production is expected to take place on a newly developed, highly automated line with a targeted annual capacity of 155,000 units.
Rivian said R2 was developed as an entirely new vehicle architecture rather than a derivative of the R1 lineup. Engineers focused on reducing part count, simplifying surfaces, and improving service access from the earliest design stages.
The company eliminated approximately 2.3 miles of wiring by simplifying electronics compared to the second-generation R1. It also incorporated large high-pressure die castings, reducing thousands of welds and fasteners. According to a Rivian Stories post, these changes cut roughly 2,000 pounds of mass compared to R1-related structures while streamlining assembly.
Fewer components are intended to improve manufacturing speed and long-term serviceability. The simplified structure is also expected to enhance driving dynamics by lowering weight and complexity.
Rivian said the R2 production line was developed alongside the vehicle itself, beginning with a digital twin of the plant to simulate and refine processes before physical installation.
The body shop will include a fully automated “hang-on” line designed for precise panel alignment. AI-driven robotic systems will scan and place components without manual handling, while wireless diagnostics will monitor build quality in real time.
Advanced vision systems will conduct automated inspections throughout the line. Rivian said AI algorithms are also used to optimize floor layout and equipment utilization, improving workflow and ergonomics.
The result, according to the company, is a plant capable of producing up to 155,000 R2 units annually, with a vehicle engineered to be reliable, scalable, and more affordable while retaining core Rivian brand attributes.
