Rivian Officially Reveals Next-Generation R1S and R1T EV Models

Rivian has lifted the curtain on its flagship electric vehicles (EVs), the R1S SUV and R1T models. With advanced performance and updated designs, the second-generation R1S will be priced at $75,900 and the R1T will be priced at $69,900.

Enhanced Performance For Adventures

In the new R1 platform, Rivian has added improvements to its power, performance, and range. The company has also introduced a proprietary drive unit offered in Tri-Motor and Quad-Motor trims, where the R1 vehicles in Tri-Motor and Quad-Motor trims deliver 850 horsepower with an acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds and 1,025 horsepower with an acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in less than 2.5 seconds, respectively. 

For its Dual Motor and Performance DM trims, they deliver 533 horsepower with an acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and 665 horsepower with an acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, respectively. As for its range, the R1 vehicles possess an estimated range from 270 miles to up to 420 miles depending on the trim and battery pack. Further details of fast-charging and other specs have not been clarified from Rivian yet.

Adventurous Design And Experience

In terms of its design, the R1 vehicles do not seem to have changed with only minor details added to the interior featuring customizable lighting and a dynamic glass roof. Technical features added also include a new sound system developed by Rivian, along with Dolby Atmos support.

As for the overall driving experience, Rivian has notably improved its R1 vehicles by introducing new features including the utilization of digital car keys through Apple Wallet or select Google Pixel devices for better convenience and security. Interestingly, Rivian has also added YouTube and Google Cast integration for its R1 vehicles in the coming months, which further amplifies the driving experience.

The most notable enhancement in the R1 vehicles is its entirely new electrical architecture and compute platform, streamlining efficiency by reducing the number of ECUs and wiring, where Rivian has designed its autonomy system called the Rivian Autonomy Platform. This platform leverages advanced camera and radar technology to improve safety and driving assistance aspects.

Overall, the 360-degree visibility, 11 cameras, five radars, and AI prediction technology have elevated the R1 vehicles to new heights. Moreover, Rivian will also present Rivian Autonomy Platform+, which has an even broader set of capabilities compared to the Rivian Autonomy Platform. 

The R1 Vehicles Standard Redefined

With these new features introduced for the R1 vehicles, CEO and founder of Rivian RJ Scaringe expressed the dedication to improving its R1 EV lineup stating, “We continue to evolve our flagship R1 vehicles, offering quality and performance without compromise. Our revamped R1S and R1T push the technical boundaries further, creating our most capable products to date.”

Through Rivian’s latest EV offerings, the company is setting a new benchmark in the EV market as it defines the connection between EVs and outdoor adventures with groundbreaking EV technologies along for the ride.

As of now, both the R1S and R1T are available for order and buyers can expect to select from a range of trims and motors to tailor to their preferences. Deliveries for both models will also start shortly from its production in its Normal, Illinois plant.
