Rivian Offers R2 Test Rides at SXSW 2026

Rivian is putting its upcoming R2 front and center at SXSW 2026, offering public ride experiences in the new mid-size SUV as part of its return as a headline sponsor of the festival.

From March 13–18, attendees in Austin can ride in the R2 on a purpose-built off-road course downtown, marking one of the first large-scale public demonstrations of the vehicle ahead of its launch.

R2 takes over downtown Austin

The R2 Electric Joyride runs daily on the 800 block of Congress, where professional drivers will guide passengers through steep inclines, tight turns and uneven terrain. The activation is designed to showcase the SUV’s capability in a controlled environment in the middle of the city.

In addition to ride experiences, visitors can explore the full R2 lineup in person at the Rivian Electric Roadhouse at 208 S Congress Ave. The display includes pricing details, performance specifications and available configurations, according to a Rivian Stories post.

Rivian’s Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe will also appear during the festival, including a March 13 session with CrunchLabs founder Mark Rober titled “Are You Faster than a Robot?” The event officially kicks off Rivian’s new partnership with CrunchLabs.

Electric Roadhouse anchors broader SXSW presence

The Electric Roadhouse serves as Rivian’s central SXSW hub, hosting panels, live music and brand activations throughout the week. Sessions include discussions on AI-defined vehicles led by Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid, and a design-focused panel featuring Chief Design Officer Jeff Hammoud.

Rivian CFO Claire McDonough will participate in a panel on innovation and leadership, while micromobility brand ALSO will present its electric bike and broader electrification strategy in a session with Scaringe.

Beyond the Roadhouse, Rivian plans pop-up experiences across Austin, including limited-edition merchandise and live performances under its “Electric Sessions” banner.

With R2 ride experiences drawing attention, SXSW 2026 doubles as a high-profile preview of Rivian’s next volume vehicle before production ramps.
