Rivian Halts Production of Amazon’s EDVs Due To Parts Shortage

Rivian has temporarily suspended production of its Electric Delivery Van (EDV) at its electric vehicle (EV) plant in Normal, Illinois due to a parts shortage, where this setback arrives as it works to scale up production and meet its production targets.

The EDVs, primarily built for Amazon, Rivian’s largest investor, have been a significant part of the company’s output since their rollout in July 2022. With over 13,500 vans already in service across the United States (U.S.) and even in Europe, the production pause could potentially impact Amazon’s delivery fleet expansion plans.

According to Bloomberg, Rivian expects to recover all missed production, although no specific timeline was provided. A Rivian spokesperson stated, “A part shortage has temporarily impacted our Electric Delivery Van (EDV) production.” Importantly, the spokesperson noted that the parts shortage would not affect the production of Rivian’s R1S and R1T models.

Amazon, for its part, has stated that it does not expect to be significantly impacted by this production pause. An Amazon spokesperson commented, “We’re aware that Rivian encountered short-term production issues this month, and we don’t expect it to impact us.” This is largely due to Amazon’s diverse delivery fleet, which includes gig workers using their own vehicles and traditional courier services.

It should be noted that this interruption comes on the heels of recent plant upgrades in April, which CEO RJ Scaringe described as a “pivotal operation event” for the company. These improvements were designed to cut down material costs for EDVs by 35% and increase production efficiency for the R1 line by 30%.

Despite the setback, Rivian maintains its target of producing 57,000 units in 2024. Having built 23,592 units in the first half of the year, the company will need to produce an additional 33,408 EVs to meet this goal.

With the issue of the parts shortage, it highlights the balance Rivian must maintain as it seeks to ramp up production while introducing new EV technologies including its cost-saving Ascend Tri drive unit.
