The company confirmed no injuries, but damage to a key production building has forced a short-term pause as teams assess and repair the site.

Rivian’s Illinois factory was hit by a tornado over the weekend, temporarily disrupting operations just weeks ahead of the highly anticipated R2 launch.
The company confirmed no injuries, but damage to a key production building has forced a short-term pause as teams assess and repair the site.
The tornado, rated EF-1, struck Rivian’s plant in Normal, Illinois, specifically impacting “Building 2,” where work related to the upcoming Rivian R2 is conducted. The facility suffered visible structural damage, including a partial roof collapse, according to images shared online.
CEO RJ Scaringe told employees that operations in the affected building have been paused, with expectations to resume sometime this week once the area is secured. The damaged section is primarily used for logistics and parts handling tied to R2 production, according to TechCrunch.
Other operations at the site remain active, and Rivian emphasized that safety protocols were followed, with all staff accounted for and unharmed.
The disruption comes at a pivotal moment for Rivian as it prepares to launch the R2, a more affordable SUV expected to drive higher volumes and improve profitability. The company is targeting sales of 20,000 to 25,000 R2 units by the end of the year, positioning it as one of the fastest EV launches in the U.S., trailing only the Tesla Model Y in scale.
Rivian has spent years reducing production costs for its R1 lineup, but continues to post quarterly losses as it invests heavily in infrastructure and future products.
Looking ahead, Rivian plans to expand production capacity with a new factory near Atlanta, Georgia, where it will eventually build the R2 and the upcoming R3 hatchback. Production at the new site is expected to begin in 2028.
While the tornado introduces short-term uncertainty, Rivian’s ability to quickly resume operations will be critical as it moves toward one of the most important launches in its history.
