Rivian Upgrades R1S and R1T With Google Cast And YouTube Integration While Receiving IIHS Top Safety Pick+ For 2025 R1S

Rivian has rolled out a comprehensive entertainment package for its R1S and R1T electric vehicles (EVs) while simultaneously securing the highest safety rating for its 2025 R1S SUV.

Rivian’s latest software update (version 2024.47) introduces a suite of entertainment features that transform the charging experience. The California-based manufacturer has become the first automotive launch partner to integrate Google Cast™ technology, effectively turning their vehicles into mobile entertainment centers when parked.

The new entertainment package includes several key features, starting with a native YouTube application optimized for large screens, similar to what you might find on a smart TV. Second, users will have access to over 3,000 apps through Google Cast functionality and SiriusXM integration with hundreds of channels of content. Lastly, there will be access to the ability to stream content from popular services like Disney+ and Max (though notably, Netflix remains unavailable).
These features are part of Rivian’s Connect+ technology package, priced at $14.99 monthly or $149.99 annually. To help users evaluate these new capabilities, Rivian is offering a temporary preview period for all customers.

While enhancing entertainment options, Rivian has also achieved a remarkable safety milestone. The 2025 R1S has earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ award, making it the only large SUV to receive this prestigious recognition this year.
The 2025 R1S achieved this distinction through several improvements including enhanced front body structure, upgraded rear seats for better crash protection, superior performance in moderate overlap front crash tests, and excellent pedestrian crash prevention systems.
The IIHS testing revealed particularly strong results in crash protection, with the R1S receiving “Good” ratings across most categories. While the headlights received an “Acceptable” rating due to some glare concerns, this minor limitation didn’t prevent the vehicle from achieving the highest overall safety designation.
Beyond entertainment and safety, the latest software update brings several quality-of-life improvements:

These updates demonstrate Rivian’s holistic approach to vehicle development, addressing both practical needs and user enjoyment. The combination of entertainment features and safety improvements positions Rivian’s vehicles as increasingly competitive options in the luxury EV market.
The developments at Rivian reflect the evolving nature of EVs, where success is measured by the complete user experience and safety credentials. As the EV market continues to mature, such comprehensive approaches to EV development may become increasingly important for automakers looking to stand out in a crowded field.
