Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe believes there is significant demand for a smaller electric pickup truck, adding fresh fuel to speculation that the EV maker could eventually expand beyond its current lineup of larger vehicles.

While Rivian remains focused on launching its upcoming R2 and R3 models, Scaringe indicated that compact electric trucks represent an underserved segment with substantial long-term potential.

Rivian sees opportunity beyond today’s electric truck market

During an appearance on The Drivecast in Park City, Utah, Scaringe was asked whether there is a viable market for an electric pickup smaller than the company’s R1T. His answer was immediate and emphatic.

According to Scaringe, several vehicle categories remain largely unaddressed in the EV market despite growing consumer demand. He specifically highlighted midsize SUVs, adventure-focused crossovers, and smaller pickup trucks as segments that offer meaningful opportunities for future products, according to Yahoo Autos.

The comments are notable because today’s electric pickup market is dominated by larger vehicles. Even relatively compact offerings such as the Rivian R1T remain substantially larger than the small pickup trucks that were once common in North America. As automakers focus on maximizing range, capability, and profitability, compact electric trucks have remained largely absent from the market.

Scaringe suggested that electrification opens the door to a much broader range of vehicle designs, particularly as manufacturers develop flexible EV platforms capable of supporting multiple body styles and configurations.

Future Rivian products remain under wraps

While Scaringe acknowledged interest in smaller trucks, he stopped short of confirming any future product plans. He noted that Rivian’s development teams have explored concepts such as an “R2T” pickup and other potential variants based on existing platforms.

The executive emphasized that the company’s biggest challenge is not generating ideas but determining which products should receive priority. Rivian’s current roadmap remains centered on the R2 and R3 programs, which are expected to play a critical role in expanding the brand into more affordable market segments.

Scaringe also hinted that additional vehicles could emerge from those platforms over time. He pointed to the recently unveiled R3X as an example of how Rivian can create unique derivatives from a common architecture.

Speculation has also surrounded a possible future “R4” vehicle, though Scaringe declined to reveal details. When asked whether it could be a pickup truck, he only responded that it “could be a lot of things.”

For now, Rivian’s next major focus remains bringing the R2 and R3 to market. But Scaringe’s comments suggest the idea of a compact electric pickup remains very much alive inside the company.
