Rivian Adds Apple Watch Controls for R1T and R1S

Rivian is expanding its software ecosystem with a new Apple Watch app that lets owners control key vehicle functions directly from their wrist. The update, rolling out next week as part of a broader mobile and vehicle software refresh, underscores Rivian’s push to position software as a core differentiator alongside its electric trucks and SUVs.

Apple Watch becomes a digital key and control hub

The new companion app will allow owners of the Rivian R1T and Rivian R1S to lock and unlock doors, vent windows, and activate the alarm using an Apple Watch.

Rivian is also introducing customizable features. Users can rotate the Watch’s digital crown to adjust cabin temperature or set a target state of charge. The app supports four configurable quick controls, allowing drivers to prioritize their most-used functions, according to a Rivian Stories post.

There are hardware-based differences between generations. First-generation R1 vehicles will require users to open the Watch app and tap a lock icon to secure or unlock the vehicle. Second-generation models can unlock automatically as the driver approaches, provided a digital key is configured.

Broader software update enhances usability

The Apple Watch integration arrives alongside a wider vehicle software update. Enhancements include a revised “kneel mode” that lowers the suspension an additional inch for easier entry and loading. Drivers can now switch between drive modes without disengaging advanced driver assistance systems.

Cold-weather visibility has also been improved. A new blue-tinted indicator on the battery graphic shows how much energy is being used to warm the pack, giving drivers clearer insight into winter performance impacts.

Software remains central to Rivian’s long-term strategy. In 2024, Rivian and Volkswagen Group formed a $5.8 billion technology joint venture aimed at integrating Rivian-developed software into future VW Group vehicles. The Apple Watch expansion reflects Rivian’s continued focus on digital features as both a consumer benefit and a competitive edge.
