Porsche has announced its plans for the future of its popular Cayenne model, revealing that the next generation will be in the form of an electric vehicle (EV).

Porsche has also confirmed its Cayenne model in EV form but also announced the continued production of hybrid and gasoline-powered models. Also, the company started testing camouflaged prototypes of the all-electric fourth-generation Cayenne which is based on a further development of the 800-volt Premium Platform Electric (PPE).

Michael Steiner, Porsche’s R&D chief, expressed the model’s potential stating, “The flexibility of the PPE architecture allows us to integrate the latest technology in the fields of high-voltage systems, powertrain and chassis. We are going to utilize the potential of electrification to take the Cayenne to a completely new level in a number of ways – for instance, in driving performance.”

Notably, this announcement arrived shortly after Porsche revised its electrification timeline, backing away from its previous target of having EVs make up 80% of its sales by 2030. Porsche CEO Oliver Blume stated, “Our product strategy could enable us to deliver more than 80 percent of our new cars fully electrified in 2030, depending on the demand of our customers and the development of electromobility in the regions of the world.”

Furthermore, the electric Cayenne is projected to play an important role in Porsche’s electrification strategy with prototypes undergoing extensive testing worldwide. The company is planning to complete several million test kilometers under various climatic and topographical conditions before launch.

With this multi-pronged approach to the Cayenne lineup, the company’s modification to its EV plans will be determinant shortly resulting in its sales performance and production targets. As Porsche’s Macan EV is set to make a difference for the company with its latest rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration, the model will be more accessible in the EV market.

Production of the electric Cayenne is projected to take place at Volkswagen Group’s plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, where the current models are also produced. As of now, the company is aiming to launch the electric Cayenne in the next decade.
