Porsche has revealed that its upcoming all-electric Cayenne skipped an entire prototype phase thanks to the use of artificial intelligence and advanced simulations.

By relying on digital test drives and virtual prototypes, the automaker cut development time by around 20% while saving resources, eliminating the need to build and destroy roughly 120 early test vehicles. The Cayenne EV is scheduled to debut by the end of the year.

Digital testing accelerates development

According to Porsche, the Cayenne EV is the brand’s first model to move directly from digital testing into pre-series production. Engineers used computer simulations, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality to evaluate designs and performance long before physical components were assembled, according to Inside EVs.

Deputy Chairman Michael Steiner explained that this new process cut both time and material use significantly. Sascha Niesen, head of vehicle testing at Porsche’s Weissach Development Center, added that while simulations played a central role, human engineers still verified results and applied finishing touches to ensure accuracy.

“This project was the first in which we went directly from digital complete vehicle testing to pre-series production,” Steiner said.

Charging capability remains key priority

Despite the heavy reliance on AI and virtual testing, Porsche still emphasized the importance of physical validation, especially in areas like charging performance under extreme temperatures. Engineers tested prototypes in hot and cold conditions to ensure the Cayenne EV could maintain fast charging without requiring battery preconditioning. Porsche expects the SUV to deliver peak charging power of 400 kW, enabling a 10–80% recharge in just 16 minutes.

The Cayenne EV is also expected to feature optional wireless charging at up to 11 kW. For approximately $8,000, owners could install a charging pad and compatible hardware, allowing them to recharge without cables. Porsche says the system offers convenience without sacrificing efficiency. Combined with the fast-charging capabilities, the Cayenne EV is set to be one of the most advanced vehicles in its class, joining the electric Macan on the brand’s 800-volt Scalable Systems Platform.
