The rise of recalls in electric vehicles (EVs) has been ongoing in the United States (U.S.) and Porsche the next one it announced a massive recall affecting nearly 32,000 Taycan units sold in the U.S. due to potential front brake system failures.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), around 32,000 Taycans from model years 2020 to 2025 specifically ones produced from October 21, 2019, through June 13, 2024. This is nearly the entire production run to date, including some facelifted 2025 models.

As for the issue, the Taycans are subject to recall because of the front brake hoses concerning issues that may develop cracks over time. This could lead to brake fluid leakage and a subsequent loss of front braking pressure.

The issue was first notified by Porsche in June 2023 after receiving several field reports, primarily from the U.S. market. Furthermore, the defect in the Taycan is caused by certain steering movements and driving conditions that stress the front brake hoses at their point of “minimum bending radius,” damaging the inner fabric layer according to NHTSA. While the rear brakes remain unaffected, the loss of front braking power could strongly increase stopping distances and increase the risk of accidents.

It is important to note that Porsche estimates only about 5% of the recalled Taycans are likely to experience this issue. Nevertheless, the company is taking proactive actions by recalling all potentially affected models. Taycan owners may receive warning signs before a complete failure occurs, such as “brake fluid low” or “PSM failure” messages on the dashboard. Interestingly, Porsche stresses that the rear braking system remains functional even if the front system fails as it has met Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard requirements.

In regards to addressing the issue, Porsche dealers will replace the front brake hoses with an improved design featuring an increased bending radius at no cost to the owners. This modification aims to reduce the overall stress on the hoses and prevent future failures.

With the recall by Porsche affecting its popular Taycan model in its EV lineup, it spotlights the hurdles that Porsche and many other automakers have to resolve as it aims to take charge in the EV market. As many EVs are getting recalled as of now, the focus of remaining vigilant in ensuring safety and reliability must be further prioritized. Porsche plans to notify dealerships by July 3, 2024, and will begin contacting affected Taycan owners by mid-August.
