Polestar has issued a recall for certain 2025 Polestar 3 electric SUVs in the United States after discovering that rear seat backrest components may not have been properly secured during assembly. The issue could allow the rear backrests to release in a crash, increasing the risk of cargo entering the passenger cabin.

Polestar recalls 2025 Polestar 3 SUVs over rear seat issue

Polestar said the recall affects select 2025 model-year Polestar 3 vehicles built between October 6, 2024, and September 22, 2025, at its Charleston, South Carolina, assembly plant. An estimated 213 vehicles in the United States may be affected.

According to Polestar Automotive USA, the striker brackets for the rear seat backrests may not have been assembled correctly, with workers tightening only one of the required attaching nuts instead of both. As a result, the rear seat backrests may fail to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 207, potentially releasing during a collision, according to autoevolution.

Polestar said dealers were notified of the issue between January 23 and January 26, 2026. Service technicians will inspect the affected vehicles and, if necessary, retorque the attaching nuts and remount the brackets to specification. Customer notification letters are expected to be mailed no later than March 22, 2026.

Recall highlights broader challenges for Polestar 3 in the U.S.

All affected vehicles were assembled in the United States and carry VINs beginning with “1,” indicating U.S. production, with the tenth character “S” designating the 2025 model year and the eleventh character “4” confirming South Carolina assembly.

The recall comes as Polestar continues to face headwinds in the U.S. market. The United States accounted for less than 20% of the brand’s 60,119 global deliveries in 2025, despite strong demand for large SUVs in the region. The Polestar 3 has struggled amid high interest rates, residual value concerns, software-related issues, and pricing pressure tied to Chinese-sourced components and tariff exposure.

Pricing has also been impacted by the expiration of the federal EV tax credit in September 2025. The Polestar 3 currently starts at $67,500 before destination, though Polestar is offering aggressive incentives to clear remaining 2025 inventory ahead of 2026 models. The company’s Clean Vehicle Incentive provides discounts of up to $18,000, bringing the entry price closer to $49,500.
