Polestar has begun showcasing its upcoming flagship EV, the Polestar 5, ahead of its market launch, with early drives suggesting the luxury performance sedan could become one of the brand’s most important halo vehicles. Combining a bespoke aluminum platform, up to 871 horsepower, and a design closely inspired by the original Precept concept, the Polestar 5 aims to compete in the premium electric GT segment while offering a distinctly different character from rivals such as the Porsche Taycan.

The vehicle represents a rare clean-sheet engineering effort in today’s automotive industry, with much of its development led by a British engineering team near Nuneaton.

Polestar 5 combines bespoke engineering with flagship performance

Unlike most modern EVs built on shared platforms, the Polestar 5 rides on its own dedicated aluminum architecture featuring bonded extrusions similar to techniques historically associated with Lotus.

The flagship sedan will launch with two primary configurations. The Dual Motor model produces 737 horsepower and offers an estimated WLTP range of 421 miles, while the higher-performance variant boosts output to 871 horsepower and delivers a 0-62 mph time of 3.1 seconds, according to Autocar UK.

Both versions use a 112-kWh battery pack operating on an 800-volt electrical architecture, enabling charging speeds of up to 350 kW. Polestar estimates the battery can charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 22 minutes under optimal conditions.

Inside, the Polestar 5 prioritizes long-distance comfort with a spacious cabin, generous rear legroom, and a panoramic glass roof. The vehicle’s wheelbase approaches that of a luxury limousine, helping create a more spacious interior than many competing performance EVs.

Polestar targets luxury GT buyers rather than track-focused enthusiasts

While the Polestar 5 delivers supercar-level acceleration, early impressions suggest the vehicle focuses more on grand touring capability than outright driving aggression.

Reviewers praised the sedan’s ride quality, steering precision, and composure on challenging roads. The vehicle’s long wheelbase and carefully tuned suspension reportedly help balance performance with comfort, making it particularly well suited for daily driving and long-distance travel.

The approach differentiates the Polestar 5 from competitors such as the Porsche Taycan, which places greater emphasis on sporty handling dynamics.

Prices are expected to start around £89,500 for the Dual Motor Launch Edition, positioning the sedan below many six-figure luxury EV competitors while still offering flagship-level performance and technology.

The Polestar 5 also serves as a showcase for the brand’s design philosophy and engineering ambitions. As Polestar expands its lineup globally, the vehicle is expected to function as a halo product that defines the company’s vision for premium electric performance.
