Nissan will be adopting advanced gigacasting technology as it takes cues from fellow automaker Tesla to slash costs and reduce complexity in its electric vehicle (EV) production.

With Nissan introducing gigacasting into its EV lineup, this manufacturing tactic involves the production of large, single pieces of an EV’s structure utilizing massive casting machines that simplify the production process while driving down cost. As aforementioned, Tesla is known for utilizing this manufacturing tactic that involves high-tech gigapresses on large aluminum components.

Nissan’s venture into gigacasting production is also a part of the company’s strategy to cut down costs of EV parts by 10% and reach a 20% reduction in weight as well according to Automotive News. Furthermore, Nissan is expected to decrease its overall expenses which is estimated at around 30%. This will result in savings of around $1 billion in development costs for five future models aimed for a 2027 release.

Moreover, Nissan’s upcoming EV models will see the rear underbody formed using aluminum casting in 6,000-ton presses, facilitating production and improving structural integrity. Although the challenges of high upfront costs associated with complex machinery and the integration of aluminum modules with steel parts in the EV’s structure, Nissan is proactively addressing these challenges by exploring innovative fastening methods such as self-piercing rivets and drill screw technologies according to Automotive News

As Nissan is planning to achieve its electrification goals of making its battery EVs account for 40% of its U.S. sales by 2030, the company’s dedication to investing in EVs will bring its position in the automotive landscape to new heights. With Nissan adopting gigacasting as well, the EV market will expect its upcoming EV models to arrive in exceptional states that will entice potential buyers.
