NIO Launches Supercharged 4th Gen Battery Swap Stations in China

With battery swapping technology becoming more noticeable in the electric vehicle (EV) landscape, NIO has rolled out its latest battery swap technology, the 4th generation Power Swap Station.

Exceptional Rapid Battery Swapping Time

NIO’s 4th generation Power Swap Station comes with an accelerated 144-second battery swap time and a 22% improvement over NIO’s 3rd generation stations. This latest speed component is enabled by an array of six ultra-wide field-of-view LiDAR sensors working in tandem with four high-powered Orin X AI chips providing over 1,000 TOPS (tera operations per second) of computing muscle.

In addition to the speed component, NIO has also turbo-charged the battery-swapping station’s throughput capacity. The larger 4.0 stations contains 23 batteries, enabling up to 480 swaps per day at each location, which quadruple the limit of earlier designs.

With that level of capabilities, NIO’s new stations allow a fully automated swap procedure. Notably, EV owners can initiate the rapid battery exchange from inside or outside their vehicle with just a tap on the center display. Furthermore, complementing the new swap stations is NIO’s newly launched 640 kW liquid-cooled Power Charger. This features a blistering 765-amp output with patented lightweight, easy-to-handle liquid-cooled cables.

NIO’s Nationwide Deployment Strategy

The initial Power Swap Station 4.0 deployments precede a nationwide rollout as part of NIO’s strategic partnership with energy provider Zhongan. Both companies plan to produce numerous integrated “all-in-one” charging and swap stations capable of generating solar power and storing energy on-site.

With over 2,400 swap stations and 22,600 chargers already installed across China including 804 swap stations on major highways, NIO is increasing accessibility to its effortless charging and battery swapping solutions or its EV owners. The first units are now operational in the Chinese cities of Guangzhou and Lu’an, ushering in a new era of fast and automated battery swapping for NIO’s growing EV lineup and partner brands.
