Nio opened pre-sales for its flagship ES9 SUV at a significantly lower price point than its technology-sharing ET9 sedan, signaling a deliberate push to position the model as a high-end yet value-driven offering. The ES9 starts at 528,000 yuan ($77,230), about 31% below the ET9, with deliveries expected to begin June 1 following an official launch in late May.

Nio positions ES9 as value-driven flagship SUV

Nio unveiled the ES9 at a technology event in Hangzhou, introducing a full-size, six-seat electric SUV aimed at replicating the success of its ES8 strategy. Despite its premium positioning, the ES9’s pricing undercuts the ET9 sedan, which has served as the company’s technology and pricing benchmark since its launch in late 2024.

The ES9 is offered in three variants, with starting prices of 528,000 yuan, 588,000 yuan, and 658,000 yuan with the battery included. Buyers opting for Nio’s battery-as-a-service (BaaS) model can lower entry pricing to as little as 420,000 yuan, according to CNEV Post.

Like the ET9, the ES9 integrates Nio’s latest technologies, including the in-house 5-nanometer Shenji NX9031 autonomous driving chip and the SkyRide chassis system. However, the entry-level model excludes active suspension, while the mid-tier Signature Edition, equipped with SkyRide, still comes in more than 23% cheaper than the ET9.

This pricing approach mirrors Nio’s playbook with the ES8, where lowering costs while retaining flagship features helped drive strong demand in the premium segment.

Strong momentum and tech positioning support launch strategy

Nio’s ES8 strategy has already proven effective. The third-generation ES8 reached 90,000 deliveries in just 195 days, becoming the company’s best-selling model in recent months despite its premium positioning.

The ES9 builds on that momentum with flagship-level performance and capability. It features a dual-motor setup producing 520 kW, enabling 0–100 km/h acceleration in 4.3 seconds. A 102 kWh battery pack delivers up to 620 kilometers of range, while rear-wheel steering enhances maneuverability for the large SUV.

The model also includes a 15.6-inch AMOLED floating display powered by Nio’s SkyOS, reinforcing its high-tech positioning. Early display units have already arrived at retail locations across China, with a full public debut planned at the Beijing Auto Show later this month.

The ES9 launch comes amid improving business performance, with Nio’s shares recently hitting a five-month high, reflecting growing investor confidence as the company accelerates its product cycle.
