The Steer-By-Wire Technology, Developed In Collaboration With ZF, Offers Enhanced Maneuverability, Safety, And Adaptability

NIO has disclosed its flagship ET9 electric vehicle (EV) sedan featuring a steer-by-wire system developed in partnership with German technology group ZF, where it eliminates the traditional mechanical connection between the steering wheel and front wheels.

The steer-by-wire system, integrated into NIO’s “SkyRide” chassis, designates a sophisticated approach to vehicle control. Instead of relying on physical linkages, the system employs advanced actuators and sensors to translate driver inputs into precise wheel movements. This digital transformation enables the vehicle to dynamically adjust its steering ratio based on driving conditions, offering unprecedented control and comfort.
At low speeds, such as during parking maneuvers, the system requires just 0.6 turns of the steering wheel to achieve full directional change, significantly improving maneuverability in tight spaces. As vehicle speed increases, the steering ratio automatically adjusts to ensure stability and controlled handling, demonstrating the system’s adaptive capabilities.

Moreover, the steer-by-wire system incorporates multiple features to maintain control even if a component fails. The absence of a mechanical steering column not only enhances crash safety but also allows the system to filter out unwanted road vibrations, resulting in a smoother, more refined driving experience. In addition, the digital nature of the system provides better control on slippery surfaces by reducing response delays and enabling more precise handling.
Dr. Peter Holdmann, Member of the Board of Management at ZF and head of the Chassis Solutions Division, emphasizes the significance of this development stating, “We are supplying customers with the steering of the future. With our production-ready steer-by-wire steering system, we are launching the era of the software-defined vehicle.”
The collaboration between NIO and ZF, established in 2022, exemplifies the growing importance of international partnerships in advancing automotive technology. NIO’s aim for the European market is evident through its network of five R&D centers across the continent, including a facility in Oxford, United Kingdom. This strategic partnership has already yielded significant results, with ZF securing orders for various by-wire technologies from global manufacturers.
Notably, the steer-by-wire system positions the ET9 as one of the first production vehicles to embrace this technology fully. Its digital nature allows for continuous development through over-the-air updates and integration with future autonomous driving functions. This adaptability ensures the system can evolve alongside advancing automotive technologies, making the ET9 an example of next-generation EVs.
