Nio has reached another milestone for its flagship ES9, delivering the 20,000th example of the premium electric SUV just 73 days after customer deliveries began.

The achievement comes as demand for the model continues to exceed production, with buyers of higher-end variants still facing delivery wait times of more than three months.

ES9 reaches 20,000 deliveries in just over two months

Nio said the ES9 reached 20,000 cumulative deliveries 73 days after the first customer handovers began on May 28.

The company noted that the milestone sets a new delivery record for premium battery-electric vehicles in China’s 500,000-yuan (about $73,630) segment, according to CNEV Post.

Nio founder, chairman, and CEO William Li personally handed over the milestone vehicle to customer Xiao Wenhua, chairman of Huaxiangyuan Tea.

The ES9 reached its first 10,000 deliveries on June 26, meaning the second 10,000 units were delivered in approximately six weeks.

The flagship SUV starts at 498,000 yuan (about $73,630) with the battery included, while customers who choose Nio’s Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) program can purchase the vehicle from 390,000 yuan (about $57,580).

Strong demand continues to outpace supply

Nio said demand for the ES9 remains higher than available production capacity.

Current delivery estimates for higher-trim versions equipped with the SkyRide fully active suspension system stand at 13 to 14 weeks, while the entry-level model carries a shorter wait of three to four weeks.

The model has also attracted several high-profile customers. Basketball Hall of Famer Yao Ming, who serves as the ES9’s chief experience officer, placed his order during the vehicle’s launch event and took delivery on Aug. 5.

Analysts have also expressed confidence in the model’s performance. Deutsche Bank estimated in June that the ES9 had already accumulated more than 25,000 non-cancelable orders and raised its full-year delivery forecast for the SUV to 56,000 units.

The ES9’s strong sales have also contributed to higher average selling prices for Nio’s core brand as the company continues working toward improved profitability.
