GM and Hyundai plan to co-develop five new vehicles, including an electric commercial van and several hybrid-capable models.

General Motors and Hyundai Motor Company are moving forward with plans to co-develop five new vehicles, including a U.S.-built electric commercial van and several hybrid-capable models for Latin America. The announcement marks a key milestone in the two automakers’ ongoing strategic partnership. Through their collaboration, GM and Hyundai aim to reach over 800,000 unit sales annually once production ramps up by 2028.
“Hyundai’s strategic collaboration with GM will help us continue to deliver value and choice to our customers across multiple vehicle segments and markets. Our combined scale in North and South America helps us to more efficiently provide our customers more of what they want – beautifully designed, high-quality, safety-focused vehicles with technology they appreciate,” said José Muñoz, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company.
Hyundai and GM’s collaboration will focus heavily on Central and South America, where the companies plan to introduce four models: a compact SUV, a compact car, a compact pickup, and a mid-size pickup. All four will be flexible in powertrain options, offering both internal combustion and hybrid variants. These vehicles will be based on shared platforms, while each automaker will retain control over the unique exterior and interior designs in line with their respective brand identities.
GM will take the lead on the mid-size pickup platform, while Hyundai will oversee development of the compact models. Design and engineering work for the Latin American offerings is already underway, with market launches expected in 2028. According to executives, the vehicles are tailored to the largest, fastest-growing segments in those regions.

In addition to the Latin American lineup, the companies will jointly develop an all-electric commercial van for the North American market. Hyundai will spearhead development of the EV van, which will be manufactured in the U.S. as early as 2028. This product targets increasing demand from commercial fleets seeking electric options.
The partnership will also explore joint sourcing of raw materials, logistics, and even low-emissions steel as part of a broader sustainability strategy. Both companies view the collaboration as a means to scale quickly, reduce development costs, and offer a more diverse range of vehicle choices.
