MG Motor’s Investment In Mexico Aims To Capitalize On Regional Demand For Advanced And Affordable EVs

In a move that highlights the shifting dynamics of the global electric vehicle (EV) industry, MG Motor has announced plans to establish a manufacturing plant and research & development center in Mexico.
According to Reuters, this strategic expansion into the Latin American market comes as MG Motor, a subsidiary of the state-owned SAIC Motor Corp, seeks to capitalize on the region’s growing demand for affordable and technologically-advanced EVs.
Zhang Wei, the country lead for MG Motor Mexico, said in a statement that the company will be able to “not only produce vehicles, but to also produce market intelligence specifically designed for and by Latin America.”
As China increases its influence in the North American automotive landscape, this announcement arrives as the United States (U.S.) continues to limit the entry of Chinese EVs by implementing quadrupling tariffs upon them. Although that motion has been delayed by at least two weeks.
Mexico, with its strategic location and favorable trade agreements, has emerged as a prime destination for Chinese automakers looking to circumvent import tariffs and gain a foothold in the North American market. Notably, industry data shows that one in every ten cars sold in Mexico last year was of Chinese origin according to Reuters.
However, it was previously reported that Mexico was facing pressure from the U.S. to distance itself from Chinese automakers and limit the incentives offered to them in April. Mexican officials have since indicated that they will be more cautious in their approach to Chinese investments in the automotive sector.
Nevertheless, MG Motor remains undeterred as it plans to make Mexico the hub of growth and expansion for SAIC Group and MG Motor in Latin America and the Caribbean. Moreover. the company has also hinted at plans to introduce its luxury EV brand, IM, in the region.
As the battle for market share in North America is heightening, MG Motor’s expansion into Mexico is a clear signal that this trend is set to continue, with potentially far-reaching implications for the industry and geopolitics with EVs involved.
