Mercedes-Benz is preparing to end production of its EQE sedan and EQE SUV in 2026, just four years after their market debut. The move reflects both weak customer response to their styling and the brand’s broader shift toward its next-generation EV lineup.

The two models will be indirectly replaced by the upcoming C-Class EQ and GLC EQ, which debut on Mercedes’ new 800V MB.EA-M platform.

EQE models struggled to connect with traditional buyers

Launched in 2022 as part of Mercedes’ expanding EQ family, the EQE sedan was built in Bremen, Germany, while the SUV variant came out of Tuscaloosa, USA, according to Autocar. The vehicles were compact electric vehicles that promised the automaker’s conventional luxury with the tech that has been a trademark of EVs.

Despite technical updates such as larger battery packs and performance enhancements, the “soap-shaped” design language of the EQE sedan and SUV failed to resonate with Mercedes’ tradition-minded customer base. Even with ongoing upgrades, the EQE never matched the sales momentum of competitors in the luxury EV space, prompting the company to reassess its position, according to CarUp.

Next-generation EVs to fill the gap

Mercedes plans to roll out the C-Class EQ and GLC EQ starting next year, both using the more advanced 800V MB.EA-M platform. These models promise stronger efficiency, improved packaging, and features such as air suspension, rear-axle steering, and larger cargo capacities.

The lineup will eventually expand to include the E-Class EQ in 2027, which would be a true successor to the EQE sedan. While Mercedes has not officially confirmed the discontinuation, reports suggest that executives have signaled that resources are being redirected to prepare factories for the new range.
