The launch places the ES9 directly into competition with other high-end Chinese smart EVs, including the recently updated Aito M9 backed by Huawei.

Lucid Motors appeared to take aim at Ferrari just one day after the automaker unveiled its first fully electric vehicle, the Ferrari Luce. Through a pair of posts on X, Lucid positioned its Air Sapphire sedan as the more established high-performance EV, escalating competition in the rapidly evolving ultra-luxury electric segment.
Ferrari officially introduced the Luce on May 25 in Rome, unveiling a four-door electric grand tourer priced at roughly €550,000 ($640,000) with more than 1,000 horsepower from a quad-motor powertrain.
Shortly after Ferrari’s announcement, Lucid published a video highlighting the specifications of the Lucid Air Sapphire, emphasizing its 1,234 horsepower output, 1.89-second 0-60 mph acceleration time, 427 miles of EPA-estimated range, and 205 mph top speed.
The company accompanied the video with the caption: “Some are just arriving to the electric era. One has already redefined it.”
Lucid followed with another post stating, “Beauty is subjective. Performance is not.”
While Ferrari was never directly mentioned, the timing and wording were widely interpreted online as a clear reference to the newly launched Luce. The exchange quickly gained traction across social media as EV enthusiasts compared the two vehicles’ pricing, specifications, and design philosophies.
Ferrari’s first EV has generated sharply mixed reactions online, with some users criticizing the vehicle’s styling and questioning whether the Luce captured the emotional appeal traditionally associated with the brand.

The online exchange highlighted the growing rivalry between legacy performance brands entering the EV market and newer electric-focused automakers attempting to establish themselves as technological leaders.
Ferrari is betting that its luxury heritage, exclusivity, and design identity will allow the company to command premium pricing in the electric era. The Luce was co-designed with input from former Apple design chief Jony Ive and his LoveFrom studio.
Meanwhile, Lucid has built its reputation around efficiency, performance, and range leadership, though the company has struggled to scale sales volume despite strong reviews of its flagship Air lineup.
The Air Sapphire starts at roughly $250,000, substantially below the pricing of the Ferrari Luce, while delivering significantly higher power figures and longer driving range based on current published specifications.
