Kia Partners With Sojitz Corporation To Introduce The PV5 Model In 2026, Aligning With Japan’s EV Sales Goals

With its latest strategic move to expand its electric vehicle (EVs) to a global reach, Kia has announced plans to enter the Japanese market for purpose-built vehicles (PBVs).
According to Kia, the company has signed a local sales agreement with Japanese trading company Sojitz Corporation to start selling its first dedicated PBV model, the PV5, in Japan starting in 2026.
Kia’s decision to introduce PBVs in Japan comes in response to the anticipated increase in demand for small and medium-sized electric vans. This aligns with the Japanese government’s policy to transition 30% of new car sales to EVs by 2030.
“Kia decided to introduce the PBV model to the Japanese market in response to the anticipated increase in demand for small- and medium-sized electric vans, driven by the Japanese government’s policy to convert 30% of new car sales to electric vehicles by 2030,” the company stated.
Kia plans to start with the PV5 model in 2026, which will feature the CHAdeMO charging system and come equipped with V2X (vehicle-to-everything) bi-directional charging technology. The company also intends to introduce the PV7 model at a later stage, hinting at a growing PBV lineup for the Japanese market.
Sangdae Kim, Senior Vice President and Head of Kia PBV Business Division, emphasized the company’s commitment to the Japanese market stating, “We look forward to commencing PBV sales and delivering customer-centered value with the evolution of Kia’s business in the Japanese market. We will continue to introduce various PBV-related solutions optimized for local-market characteristics to satisfy the demands of our Japanese customers.”

Beyond the initial PBV models, Kia aims to establish a PBV ecosystem in Japan through partnerships with local companies. This approach aligns with Kia’s global strategy of leveraging its PBV platform to offer tailored mobility solutions that cater to specific regional and buyer needs.
The partnership with Sojitz Corporation, a diversified trading company with experience in the automotive industry, will play a crucial role in the distribution and sales of Kia’s PBVs in Japan.

Kia’s entry into the Japanese PBV market is part of the company’s global strategy to expand its presence in the rapidly growing purpose-built vehicle segment.
