Kia is recalling certain models of its EV9 electric vehicle (EV) in response to a safety issue related to inadequate headliner protection during a crash. The recall will affect 2,401 units of the 2024 EV9 Light models produced between September 25, 2023, and March 21, 2024 according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Discovered during pre-production testing at Kia’s Gwangmyeong Autoland plant in South Korea, the Kia EV9 faces issues despite being a top model in Kia’s EV lineup. With the Kia EV9 model being a successful offering for the U.S. market with several accolades received and impressive sales figures achieved, the recall highlights a setback for its winning track but also underscores the company’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its EVs.

With the Kia EV9 Light models affected, there have been no reported injuries, crashes, or fatalities related to this issue as the company is making proactive efforts to address the safety concern of the inadequate headliner protection. To fix the issue, Kia dealers will replace the headliner’s impact-absorbing plates in the affected vehicles at no cost to its owners.

Interestingly, Kia has recently started production in its Georgia plant with sales surpassing 50,000 units in May 2024. As Kia gains momentum with its EV9, uncovering the safety issue before further potential problems occur certainly reassures the company’s control of the situation.
