Kia America has bucked the trend of slowing electric vehicle (EV) sales by posting exceptional figures for the first half of 2024, achieving its highest first-half EV sales in company history.

Kia America reported 29,392 EVs sold in the first six months of 2024, which saw a staggering 112% increase year-over-year. The company’s EV sales have surpassed 5,000 units for three consecutive months, demonstrating a strong growth momentum. In regards to specific EV models, the Kia EV6 leads the charge with 10,941 units sold, up 31.3% from the previous year, closely followed by the award-winning EV9 with 9,671 units sold.

Eric Watson, vice president of sales operations at Kia America, expressed the success of EV sales derived from company’s leadership on having a diverse lineup stating, “Kia’s growing selection of hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric utility vehicles are delivering one of the most balanced lineups in the industry.”

Notably, Hyundai, the parent company of Kia, also reported major growth with its IONIQ lineup. Particularly, the company’s IONIQ 5 had its best June month sales ever, with 3,755 units sold. This brings its year-to-date total to 18,728, which is a 37% increase from last year. The IONIQ 5 had previously saw record-breaking sales figures with 4,449 units sold in May. As for the IONIQ 6, the model has seen a 113% year-over-year increase, with 6,912 units sold in the first half of 2024.

Despite these EV successes, both brands faced challenges in their overall sales. Kia’s total sales dropped by 2.0%, while Hyundai saw a modest 2.2% increase. June sales were particularly affected, with Kia down 6.5% and Hyundai down 2.5% for the month. Yet, it is important to note that without the EV sales, the figures could be much lower.

As the EV market grows with Kia and Hyundai at the forefront, both company’s strong performance in the first half of 2024 positions them as key players to watch in the ongoing transition to electric mobility. Specifically, Kia’s EV lineup reachign historic figures shows the company’s ability to maintain this growth in the face of broader market challenges, which will be crucial as we move into the second half of the year.
