In a turn of events for the electric vehicle (EV) industry, Kia and Hyundai have achieved phenomenal success in the U.S. market, driven largely by the surge in EV sales. Both Kia and its sister company, Hyundai, have reached remarkable success in the U.S. market with both companies reporting over 100% increase in sales results for its March and Q1 sales.
Kia’s introduction of the three-row EV9 electric SUV has sent shockwaves through the U.S. market, pushing EV sales up a staggering 151% in March alone. This feat marks Kia’s second-best Q1 sales result, cementing its position as a formidable player in the EV landscape.
The EV9 has been a game-changer since its launch late last year. With 1,281 units sold in March and a total of 4,007 units moved in the first quarter, the EV9 has exceeded expectations, contributing greatly to the surge in EV adoption. Notably, Kia’s EV6 also witnessed a surge in sales, with a 55% increase in March compared to last year, totaling 4,059 units sold in Q1, a 20% increase year-on-year.
Eric Watson, Kia America’s vice president of sales operations, emphasized the pivotal role of the EV9 in driving the company’s outstanding sales performance. “Our growth in SUVs and early impact of the all-new, all-electric three-row EV9 helped deliver Kia’s second-best first-quarter sales result,” Watson stated, accentuating the importance of EVs in Kia’s portfolio.
Meanwhile, Hyundai, Kia’s sister company, has also experienced remarkable success in the U.S. market, reporting its best-ever March and Q1 sales. Hyundai’s IONIQ 5, a dedicated electric vehicle, played a pivotal role in driving the company’s sales to new heights. With a 100% increase in EV sales in March and record-breaking performance in both March and Q1, Hyundai continues to showcase its prowess in the EV segment.
Randy Parker, CEO of Hyundai Motor America, expressed his enthusiasm for the company’s achievements, stating, “Demand for our vehicles, especially EVs, remains high.” The success of Hyundai’s IONIQ lineup, including the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6, underscores the growing demand for affordable and sustainable mobility solutions in the U.S. market.
Notably, both companies now have award-winning EVs in their lineup with the EV9 winning 2024 World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle while Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 won Best Multicultural Marketing Award. Moreover, Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 N won 2024 World Performance Car Award.
As both Kia and Hyundai celebrate their fantastic sales milestones, the automotive industry braces for a new era dominated by electric mobility. With innovative EV offerings like the EV9 and IONIQ series, Kia and Hyundai are leading to shape the future of EV adoption.
