In a campaign film by Hyundai, the IONIQ 5 robotaxi demonstrates its outstanding abilities. The IONIQ 5 robotaxi is developed in collaboration with autonomous driving technology partner Motional. The video shows the robotaxi in a series of public-level driving tests on the streets of Las Vegas, mirroring the conditions of a common Class C driver’s license examination. Particularly, the robotaxi demonstrated great performance with meticulous speed control, proficient lane changes, accurate stopping at intersections, and fast reactions to potential hazards.

The simulated test’s success is a part of Hyundai’s commitment to its ‘Progress for Humanity’ vision, which aims to develop advanced technology to facilitate inclusivity and provide freedom of mobility to everyone who needs it. Through initiatives like the IONIQ 5 robotaxi, individuals like Pearl Outlaw, a visually impaired American woman whose story featured prominently in the campaign film, have encouraged her to strive for independence due to her condition and this initiative spotlights the transformative potential of autonomous driving technology in improving accessibility and empowering individuals with disabilities.

Moreover, Kandice Jones who is a seasoned Driving Examiner with over 25 years of experience praised the IONIQ 5 robotaxi’s performance during the simulated test. While the test was conducted on a closed course, it replicated a simulation of real-world driving situations and the robotaxi affirmed its readiness.

Notably, the IONIQ 5 robotaxi also had extensive testing in diverse urban landscapes, including Boston, San Diego, Singapore, and South Korea. There are additional plans being made to expand the IONIQ 5 robotaxi ride-sharing service to other U.S. cities, including Los Angeles.

Sungwon Jee, Senior Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer at Hyundai Motor Company, celebrates this milestone and the company’s dedication to redefining the future of mobility stating, “We will continue our efforts to communicate our AI-based autonomous driving technology, which is being developed to provide positive changes to our customers’ everyday lives.”
