The move signals a deeper localization strategy as Hyundai looks to compete more aggressively against fast-moving Chinese automakers.

Hyundai unveils IONIQ V as centerpiece of China EV push

Hyundai Motor Company introduced the Hyundai IONIQ V at the Auto China 2026, marking the first dedicated IONIQ model tailored specifically for Chinese consumers.

Built on Hyundai’s localized strategy, “In China, For China, To Global,” the IONIQ V blends global engineering with China-focused design and technology. The model offers over 600 km of range (CLTC), a spacious 2,900 mm wheelbase, and a tech-heavy interior highlighted by a 27-inch panoramic display and AI-powered assistant, according to a press release.

Hyundai emphasized that China is now central to its global EV ambitions, citing the country’s advanced battery supply chain, rapid development cycles, and demanding consumer base.

20 new models and major investment signal long-term strategy

Hyundai outlined an aggressive expansion plan, including 20 new models in China over the next five years through its joint venture with BAIC Group. The two companies have committed 8 billion yuan in fresh investment to support localized development and production.

The broader lineup will include both battery electric and extended-range EVs, with Hyundai targeting annual sales of 500,000 units in China. Additional models—including another SUV—are already planned starting in 2027.

The strategy also leans heavily on local partnerships, with Hyundai collaborating with CATL for battery tech and Momenta for advanced driver-assistance systems.

Beyond products, Hyundai is revamping its customer experience with new retail formats, a “One Price” policy, and expanded charging infrastructure.

As competition intensifies in China’s EV market, Hyundai’s renewed push underscores a shift toward deeper localization, faster innovation, and closer integration with the country’s technology ecosystem.
