King Crab Mode enhances maneuverability by allowing the rear wheels to turn significantly faster than the front ones, improving agility in tight spaces and on challenging terrain.

GMC is rolling out its new King Crab off-roading mode to 2022 through 2025 Hummer EVs via a software update, extending the feature beyond the 2026 model where it debuted.
First introduced in May 2025, King Crab Mode enhances maneuverability by allowing the rear wheels to turn “significantly faster” than the front ones, improving agility in tight spaces and on challenging terrain.
The latest over-the-air (OTA) update has begun reaching select Hummer EV owners, with some 2025 model users already sharing screenshots of their infotainment screens showing the download in progress, according to GM Authority.
The update reportedly takes about 15 minutes to install. While 2024 and 2025 Hummer EVs can receive the update wirelessly, earlier 2022 and 2023 units will require a visit to GMC dealerships to get King Crab Mode installed manually. GMC says the rollout will expand gradually to all eligible vehicles.

Beyond the off-roading improvements, the 2026 GMC Hummer EV brings several key upgrades, including bidirectional charging, which lets the vehicle power another EV or even a home during outages. Other enhancements include Hands on Lane Change Assist and Lane Change for Route under the updated Super Cruise system.
The Carbon Fiber Edition variant introduces dark-themed accents and a high-output 24-module battery for improved performance. Safety features such as Driver Attention Assist and Intersection Automatic Emergency Braking round out the update, alongside better towing and payload capacities. Production for the 2026 model year began at GM’s Factory Zero plant in Michigan in July 2025.
