General Motors (GM) is intensifying the competition against BYD with a refreshed, more affordable version of its popular Wuling Bingo electric vehicle (EV) model. The updated 2024 Bingo packs new performance upgrades and a starting price under 56,800 yuan ($8,000), cheaper than BYD’s Seagull EV.

In detail, Wuling is arming its retro-styled Bingo hatchback with improvements aimed at closing that sales gap. The most notable update is a new water-cooled permanent magnet motor on higher trim levels. This allows a top speed increase from 62 mph to 81 mph, matching the Seagull’s maximum velocity.

As for 2024 Wuling Bingo EV specs, the peak output of the Bingo EV remains at 67 horsepower. Although the updated powertrain promises better-sustained performance at highway speeds through improved cooling. GM’s Wuling joint venture also claims the Bingo can charge from 30% to 80% in 35 minutes when equipped with DC fast charging, on par with the Seagull.

Moreover, other changes are more modest, including fresh exterior colors, upgraded infotainment, and a simplified four-trim lineup spanning an estimated 126 to 255 miles of range. But the Bingo handily undercuts the Seagull on pricing across the board.

Wuling Bingo vs. BYD Seagull

The base Bingo Light starts at just 56,800 yuan ($7,850) versus $9,700 for the entry Seagull. Even the longer-range Bingo variants top out around $11,700, offering competitive range and performance for thousands less than BYD’s Seagull.

While the Wuling Bingo does not match the Seagull’s estimated range up to 252 miles, its new capabilities and sharper pricing position it as a formidable rival, especially for cost-conscious buyers.

Notably, the Wuling Bingo has carved out the number two sales position in China’s booming small EV market behind the buzzworthy Seagull. Over 280,000 Bingos have been sold since its launch last year, trailing BYD’s 35,000 Seagull sales in May alone.

Equipped with fresh technological features, charging improvements, and affordable pricing, Wuling’s Bingo EV model challenges BYD’s affordable EV models in China. As the affordable EV battle is heating up as legacy brands fight to protect their turf, the EV market will see more offerings that will turn the heads of budget-conscious buyers.
