As General Motors (GM) transitions its Lansing plant to EV production, it has signed its largest renewable energy purchase agreement to date, a 15-year deal with NorthStar Clean Energy, a unit of CMS Energy, to supply electricity to three key assembly plants, including Lansing.

According to GM, the agreement will power the Lansing Delta Township Assembly and Lansing Grand River Assembly in Michigan, as well as the Wentzville Assembly in Missouri. Notably, the GM Lansing plant recently secured $500 million in grants for transitioning to EV production. The renewable energy will be sourced from NorthStar’s Newport Solar project in Arkansas, which delivers a capacity of 180 megawatts and is enough to power 30,000 homes annually.

Rob Threlkeld, GM’s director of global energy strategy, expressed the importance of this agreement stating, “By expanding our renewable electricity portfolio, we are taking a major step forward in reducing our carbon footprint and advancing our broader sustainability goals. This facility not only supports our renewable electricity strategy but also demonstrates our dedication to a sustainable future for all.”

As GM plans to power all its United States (U.S.) sites with 100% renewable electricity by the end of 2025, the company already secured the necessary energy sourcing agreements to achieve this goal in 2022. With the addition of the Newport Solar project, GM now has sourcing agreements from 17 renewable energy plants across 11 states.

Furthermore, the Newport Solar project will add renewable energy directly to the grid from which GM sources, contributing significantly to the company’s sustainability efforts. This approach aligns with GM’s broader strategy to lead the automotive landscape toward an all-electric state, centered around its Ultium battery platform designed to power a wide range of EVs.

With GM’s commitment to renewable energy as part of its larger goal to become carbon neutral by 2040, this latest agreement will set the company as a notable example for taking concrete steps toward sustainability.
