With the electric vehicle (EV) market seeing shifting dynamics, General Motors (GM) is scaling back its projections for EV production in 2024 due to an anticipated slowdown in demand in the United States (U.S.).

During the recent Deutsche Bank Global Auto Industry Conference, CFO Paul Jacobson underlined GM’s strategy to align production with demand and further expressed the company’s aim stating, “so at the lower end of that, and I think it reflects the momentum that we have in the business,”

Now, the company expects its EVs to constitute around 8% of total U.S. vehicle sales in 2024, which is below projected forecasts of around 10%. Furthermore, GM also expects to produce around 200,000 to 250,000 EV units in 2024, which is also below previously projected forecasts of 200,000 to 300,000 units.

Despite the revised targets, GM remains optimistic about the profitability of its EV lineup with Jacobson affirmed that EVs are expected to generate variable profit-positive outcomes once production reaches 200,000 units, which is anticipated by the end of 2024. Furthermore, GM’s board approved a $6 billion share repurchase plan aimed at bolstering shareholder returns as it aims to increase and improve profitability from its EV lineup.

This results in GM’s plans to revitalize its EV offerings to the global market with relentless and noticeable endeavors of reaching success.

However, it is noted that GM has also recently paused plans to start EV motor production at its St. Catherines plant in Ontario, Canada. As a result, GM is certainly seeing fluctuations in its ambitions with the results not always being what the company seeks in the timeline of its plans.

Nevertheless, while GM adjusts its EV production targets, its decision to revise its EV production outlook spotlights the challenges and opportunities residing in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape. As GM continues to navigate through these challenges while aiming to be full-electrified by 2035, its growth will see an outcome depending on the success of the company’s strategic initiatives for its goals in the EV market.
