GM’s Recall Affects 2023-2024 Cadillac LYRIQ Models With AWD System

General Motors (GM) has announced a massive recall affecting around 24,200 Cadillac LYRIQ electric vehicles (EVs) in North America due to a software glitch in the antilock braking system (ABS).
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall impacts 2023 to 2024 models equipped with all-wheel drive (AWD), with the majority of affected EVs located in the United States (U.S.). Moreover, the recall affects 21,469 units in the U.S., 2,700 in Canada, and 140 in Mexico. It is worth noting that single-motor rear-wheel-drive (RWD) models are not included in this recall.

The issue stems from an overly sensitive ABS that may activate unexpectedly at speeds below 25 mph on dry surfaces. As a result, this malfunction can lead to reduced brake effectiveness or, in rare cases, inoperative brakes, potentially increasing the risk of a crash.
GM initiated an investigation into the problem this spring following two reports of minor accidents allegedly resulting from brake failure. The company has confirmed that the defect only occurs under very rare circumstances and at low speeds. As of now, no injuries or fatalities have been reported in connection with this issue.
To address the issue, GM will update the electronic brake control module software. Affected EV owners can receive the update over the air (OTA) without visiting a dealership, or they can schedule an appointment at a Cadillac store if preferred.
Bill Grotz, a GM spokesperson, stated, “Dealers are already applying the update to vehicles in their possession. The condition only occurs under very rare circumstances and at low speeds.”

Notably, this marks the fifth recall for the Cadillac Lyriq since its debut in 2022 as the first Cadillac model to utilize GM’s Ultium EV component set. Previous recalls addressed issues such as improperly welded seatbelt brackets and insufficient wire insulation in the electric motor.
Recently, it was reported that GM issued a stop-sale order on certain units of the 2023 and 2024 Cadillac LYRIQ due to an issue with the integration of the model’s software and hardware systems according to GM Authority. With the initiation of this massive recall, the Cadillac LYRIQ model is facing several hurdles to stay in the EV market.
From the company’s recall initiation, this underscores the importance of ongoing software refinement and quality control in the evolving automotive landscape. GM plans to notify owners by mail starting September 23, 2024.
