The problem stems from a dashboard malfunction indicator that may not light up after the vehicle is restarted.

General Motors has announced a safety recall affecting 1,191 electric pickups from its 2026 model lineup, citing a fault with the electronic stability control (ESC) warning system.
The problem stems from a dashboard malfunction indicator that may not light up after the vehicle is restarted, leaving drivers without a warning that the ESC is compromised. Without the alert, the chance of a crash increases if the system is not functioning properly.
The recall covers 624 units of the GMC Sierra EV and 567 units of the Chevy Silverado EV, with 84 vehicles registered in Canada also included. All were manufactured before June 24, 2025, according to GM Authority.
For GMC, the Sierra EV represents its third model year and broadens the range with new Elevation and AT4 trims. The trucks are built at GM’s Factory Zero plant in Michigan, a facility responsible for the automaker’s flagship EVs, including the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ.

To resolve the recall, GM dealerships will reprogram the electronic brake control module at no cost to owners. Customers may also receive the update remotely through over-the-air software deployment. Official recall notices will be mailed, and owners can reference GM recall number N252515340 when contacting customer support. GMC has directed affected drivers to its recall center and toll-free hotline for further assistance.
This recall ultimately highlights the importance of software in vehicle safety, as electronic systems play a larger role in critical driving functions. While the affected trucks represent a small share of GM’s EV production, the automaker is moving quickly to address the flaw before scaling up deliveries of its full-size pickups.
