General Motors is advancing a data-driven approach to fleet electrification, aiming to help commercial customers transition to EVs with measurable cost and operational insights.

The strategy centers on real-world usage data rather than broad projections, as GM looks to expand its presence in the commercial EV segment.

GM uses data-driven tools to guide fleet electrification

General Motors introduced its Fleet Electrification Analysis program through GM Fleet, combining driver surveys with telematics data to assess how businesses use their vehicles.

The tool evaluates key factors such as driving patterns, charging feasibility, and operational needs, then delivers a customized roadmap for transitioning from internal combustion vehicles to EVs, according to GM Authority. The goal is to help companies adopt electrification without disrupting daily operations while improving cost efficiency.

This practical approach reflects a broader shift in the commercial EV market, where fleet operators prioritize reliability, cost savings, and workflow compatibility over headline features.

Real-world deployments highlight cost savings and durability

The strategy is already being applied in the field. Seattle-based McKinstry deployed 114 EVs, including 100 Chevrolet Silverado EV units, after analyzing fleet data with GM. The company reported fuel cost reductions of about 50%, along with lower maintenance expenses, while maintaining performance across specialized trades.

GM is also validating its vehicles in extreme conditions. Alaska-based Delta Leasing tested Silverado EV trucks in Arctic environments, where temperatures can drop to minus 40 degrees.

“The Silverado EV surpassed our expectations with its capability and range,” said Mike Forsythe, fleet manager at Delta Leasing. “It was a pleasure to drive the truck in rough, industrial road conditions. We see a future for it in the Arctic.”

As competition intensifies in the commercial EV space, GM’s focus on data-backed decision-making could help reduce uncertainty for fleet operators and accelerate broader adoption.
