Germany Emerges As Global Leader in EV Production, Second Only to China

When it comes to electric vehicles, the production aspect is crucial for any automaker and even country that aims to thrive in the EV market. As such, Germany has followed through by solidifying its position as a powerhouse in EV production as it is now the second-largest EV producer globally, trailing only behind China.

Germany’s EV Production Scale

In terms of the EV production numbers from Germany, the country reached around 1.27 million battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) produced globally in 2023. Moreover, Germany has stood out from the rest with its massive export volume, with 76% of its EVs sold overseas.

As for its place in the European market, Germany leads by a wide margin, notably producing more EVs with 995,000 EVs rolled off the assembly lines in 2023 according to the VDA. It is also important to note that the United States is trailing behind in third place globally and Spain trails behind second place in the European market. Interestingly, Spain and France produced 256,000 units and 225,000 units, respectively, with both figures combined still does not make reach Germany’s figure.

Challenges Remain Ahead

Despite Germany’s EV production figures, the country faces challenges with the sudden revision of the EV subsidy program at the end of 2024 creating uncertainty for manufacturers and buyers alike. Previously, the program provided subsidies of up to 6,750 euros. However, revisions have reduced subsidies, with only vehicles priced under 45,000 euros eligible for funding.

Nevertheless, EV production is still ramping up including Northvolt’s launching of an EV battery plant in Germany. Furthermore, Stefan Di Bitonto, an automotive expert at Germany Trade & Invest, expressed Germany’s lead in EV production stating, “Germany is leading the way in Europe’s transition to clean mobility, producing nearly a million purely electric vehicles last year,” stated Stefan Di Bitonto. “Germany is also the global leader in innovation in electric propulsion, with one-third of patents in this area originating from Germany.”

As Germany embraces opportunities in the EV market with its leadership in Europe and contributions to global EV production, the country’s role in shaping the European market will depend on ongoing investments in technology and charging infrastructure as Germany is positioned as a key player in the transition to electric mobility.
