Ford is expanding its latest hands-free driving software to current truck owners, bringing BlueCruise 1.4 to 2022–2024 F-150 Lightning and 2022–2023 F-150 models.

Previously available only on 2025 trucks, the update introduces longer hands-free engagement, smoother lane centering, and new features like lane change assist. CEO Jim Farley highlighted the move on X, calling it “exciting news for truck owners” and noting the update takes some vehicles from version 1.0 to 1.4.

Hands-free features

BlueCruise 1.4 is designed to make highway travel less stressful and more intuitive for truck drivers. According to Ford’s internal testing, the latest version allows drivers to remain in hands-free mode up to eight times longer compared to BlueCruise 1.0, and five times longer than version 1.2, according to Ford in a press release.

The update delivers greater in-lane stability, reducing side-to-side movements and cutting lane deviations by nearly 80%. It also introduces in-lane repositioning, which gives more space when passing larger vehicles, and lane change assist, which lets drivers switch lanes hands-free by simply tapping the turn signal. Together, these improvements offer a more seamless driving experience whether on a daily commute or a long highway trip.

Software rollout

Ford is deploying the BlueCruise 1.4 upgrade in phases, beginning with eligible F-150 Lightning and F-150 trucks. Updates are delivered over the air to ensure compatibility with each model year, which requires complex calibration across multiple onboard systems. In addition to this rollout, BlueCruise 1.4 now comes factory-installed on the 2025 Ford F-150, F-150 Lightning, Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator.

Ford has also upgraded 2021–2023 Mustang Mach-E vehicles to BlueCruise 1.3, with plans to extend the newest versions to nine Ford and Lincoln vehicle lines covering gas, hybrid, and electric powertrains. The company emphasizes that BlueCruise remains a driver-assist feature, requiring constant driver attention despite its enhanced capabilities.
