Ford Motor Company has pushed back the release of two highly anticipated next-generation electric vehicles as it pivots toward building smaller, more affordable models.

The company’s full-size electric pickup planned for Ford’s BlueOval City plant in Tennessee will now debut in 2028 instead of 2027. The new E-Transit van, produced at its Ohio facility, will also be delayed from 2026 to 2028.

Large EV projects take a back seat

Ford’s postponed pickup is intended as the successor to the F-150 Lightning, a popular electric pickup truck in the United States. Meanwhile, the updated E-Transit would have built on Ford’s commercial EV success.
The delays follow a series of costly quality issues and industry-leading recalls, alongside a projected $5.5 billion loss in Ford’s EV and software unit for 2025.

According to Reuters, the automaker has already abandoned plans for a three-row electric SUV, with CEO Jim Farley signaling that oversized EVs are no longer the primary development priority. However, Ford recently shared that it “will be nimble in adjusting our product launch timing to meet market needs and customer demand while targeting improved profitability.”

Strategy pivots toward affordable EVs

Ford’s decision comes amid growing pressure from Chinese automakers, whose lower-cost EVs are intensifying price competition globally. In response, Ford is streamlining its development process to prioritize smaller, urban-focused electric vehicles on a next-generation platform.

“The pure EV market in the U.S. seems to us very clear: small vehicles used for commuting and around town,” Farley told analysts.

The company will unveil its new EV platform and several upcoming models on August 11 at an event in Kentucky. Farley has described the launch as a potential “Model T moment” for Ford, positioning it as a turning point in the company’s EV roadmap aimed at restoring profitability to its Ford e division.
