Ford says all of its Michigan-based facilities will run on 100% carbon-free, renewable electricity by 2027, accelerating the automaker’s push toward carbon-neutral operations. The move brings Ford’s home-state footprint ahead of its broader global targets.

Ford targets carbon-free operations across Michigan by 2027

Ford Motor Company said every facility it operates in Michigan will be powered entirely by carbon-free, renewable electricity by 2027. The milestone advances Ford’s long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality across its global operations by 2050, which focuses on vehicle use, the supply base, and company facilities.

“By 2027, all Ford facilities in our home state of Michigan will run on 100% carbon-free and renewable electricity,” said Mary Wroten, Ford’s executive director of global sustainability, ESG, and the Environmental Quality Office. She added that the company is prioritizing energy conservation, efficiency, and lower-emission power sources across its manufacturing network, according to Ford Authority.

Renewables, efficiency upgrades drive earlier timeline

Ford said new facilities are being designed to run on carbon-free power from day one, while existing plants are undergoing upgrades to reduce energy use and emissions. The company has installed solar arrays at multiple production sites worldwide and signed agreements with energy providers to increase access to renewable electricity.

The Michigan timeline builds on Ford’s broader strategy, which includes expanded hybrid offerings and future EVs under its Universal EV Platform, alongside efforts to cut emissions across its supply chain. While Ford previously outlined a 2050 deadline for companywide carbon neutrality, the Michigan commitment reflects a faster pace in key regions as the automaker works toward its targets.
