With another electric vehicle (EV) recall situation occurring yet again, Fisker has announced major recalls of more than 18,000 Ocean SUVs across North America and Europe. The recall is due to concerns over faulty software and noncompliance with safety standards and encompasses two distinct issues affecting different batches of EVs.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Fisker is voluntarily recalling 11,201 Ocean models in the United States (U.S.), Canada, and Europe due to potential software glitches affecting the Motor Control Unit (MCU) and Vehicle Control Unit (VCU). These issues can trigger a safe state protection mode, which could lead to a loss of motor power while driving on the road. To owners with the affected models, they are instructed to promptly receive an over-the-air (OTA) software update to resolve these safety concerns.

Furthermore, Fisker is also recalling 6,864 Ocean models in the U.S. and 281 units in Canada for a different concern regarding noncompliance issues related to federal safety standards. Specifically, the affected units do not meet regulatory requirements concerning gauge and telltale icon displays in the cluster.

In detail, the amber color of brake and malfunction telltales, instead of red, along with missing brake lining telltales on the cluster screen, are among the identified discrepancies. As a result, the NHTSA spotlighted concerns regarding these compliance issues that they could potentially compromise critical warnings, contribute to driver distraction, and reduce overall vehicle reliability. Fisker has also begun the process of completing the OTA update process for affected vehicles by June 30, 2024.

With several automaker’s EVs facing recalls in recent times, this latest recall from Fisker highlights the further challenges that the company faces with financial restructuring efforts and production disruptions earlier in the year. Notably, there could be more issues ongoing for Fisker as the NHTSA has been investigating reports regarding its EVs of unexpectedly activating automatic emergency braking systems, underlining that Fisker’s strategy of examining its EVs rollout from its assembly line needs another look.

As Fisker works on these recall issues for its Ocean models, the EV industry’s prioritization of driver safety and regulatory compliance should not be forgotten. With the acceleration to electric mobility underway, recalls are the last thing that automakers want on their plate of issues. But, if they are there, promptly solving the issues should not be overlooked. Fisker has told its dealer network to notify affected owners by the end of June 2024.
