EVgo and GM Unveil Major Expansion: 400 Fast Charging Stations Coming Nationwide

EVgo and General Motors (GM) have announced an ambitious plan to enhance the electric vehicle (EV) charging experience across the United States (U.S.), where they are set to deploy 400 fast charging stalls at new flagship locations. 

Introducing Advanced Flagship Stations

The flagship stations, co-branded by EVgo and GM Energy, are designed to set a new benchmark in the EV charging landscape. According to EVgo, these advanced stations will feature high-power 350kW chargers, ample lighting, protective canopies, pull-through access, and security cameras. Most locations are projected to house up to 20 charging stalls, with some sites offering even more capacity to meet growing demand.

Dennis Kish, President at EVgo, expressed the future-focused approach of this initiative. “The future of EV charging is larger stall count locations, high-power charging, and designing around features that customers love,” Kish stated. He added that this evolution in their collaboration with GM brings “the future of EV charging” to the present.

Moreover, the new flagship stations will be strategically located near amenities including shopping centers, restaurants, and coffee shops, allowing drivers to make the most of their charging time. The initial rollout will target metropolitan areas in key states including Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New York, and Texas, with the first location expected to open by 2025.

To expedite construction and allow for future expansions, EVgo will leverage its prefabrication approach in building these stations. This method is projected to streamline timelines and provide modularity for easy scaling as demand grows.

GM Energy VP Wade Sheffer highlighted the importance of this expansion, stating, “Ensuring that our customers have seamless access to convenient and reliable charging is imperative, and this effort will take it to the next level.”

Expanding the EVgo and GM Partnership

As part of a broader collaboration between EVgo and GM to expand the overall metropolitan charging infrastructure, the companies aim to install a total of 2,850 DC fast charging stalls across the country. They recently celebrated the opening of their 1,000th fast-charging stall in August 2023 and are on track to reach 2,000 stalls by the end of 2024.

The partnership between EVgo and GM dates back to 2020 when they first agreed to deploy fast chargers across the US. Since then, their collaboration has expanded to include initiatives such as GM’s Ultium Charge 360 program and the introduction of Plug & Charge capabilities for newer GM EVs.

As this expansion of charging infrastructure addresses a critical need for better charging solutions, the combination of high-power charging technology with thoughtful amenities and strategic locations will make EV ownership more accessible and appealing to the automotive market.
